Hu Maliwu (Malibu): Carbon Canyon 1
In 2000, this two-acre site was preliminarily landscaped with non-native ornamentals and thirsty plants. Over time, the drought exacerbated the necessary and unsustainable water use, leading to degraded, compacted soil and an overgrowth of invasive species.
Over the last five years, the focus has shifted to soil regeneration through cover crops, native plants, and biodynamic practices. The goal is to build biodiversity, harvest rainwater, create swales for water retention, and develop a food forest. Today, volunteers, wildlife, and native plants are gradually restoring the land, fostering a thriving, biodiverse ecosystem.
