Kuruvungna - Tongva Springs
We assisted volunteers at the Gabrieliño-Tongva Springs Foundation in their ongoing revitalization and restoration of this sacred 2-acre site.
The Tongva, a prosperous, sophisticated Uto-Aztecan-speaking people, were the original inhabitants of Los Angeles and the Channel Islands. Kuruvungna, which translates as “place where we are in the sun,” was a significant village on what is now the campus of University High School in West Los Angeles. Recent archaeological evidence suggests that the area surrounding the natural springs has been occupied for over 8,000 years.
This site has been reclaimed and continues to be restored by Descendants of the Gabrieliño-Tongva, alumni of University High School, community activists, and local volunteers.
SSC helped with mulching, sheet mulching, and general cleanup of walkways and pathways.
